My Rise of The Guardian Shock.

The other night I was checking a journal entry of my fellow deviantart colleague rufftoon: [link]
In this article he introduced the trailer of an upcoming animated Film called Rise of the Guardian by DreamWorks .
Interesting title, I thought, so I checked the trailer.
What I saw had punched me right in my stomach.  It was like Santaman is coming to live, but actually NO he didn't.....

For those of you who are familiar with my work know my concept of Santaman and the animated short movie I did about it.

"So you think You know all about good old Santa? Think again!!!

The truth will be revealed, now it's time for Santaman!
The whole world claims to know him, but only few people have actually ever seen him – and even fewer would admit to this!
It turns out the time-honoured gentleman with his big bushy beard is actually a punchy superhero – talk about "Silent Night"!
Under the red jelly bag cap we find a grim patron saint, who takes on the baddies of this world."

-notice: this line up contains (beside of Santaman and other):
the Tooth Fairy, the Easter bunny, the Sandman, and even the Boogieman (the green skinned guy in the left group)




I know, what I saw was just a trailer, not the final Movie , but so whole thing is soooo close to my Santaman concept , especially the early stuff,
that I felt quiet shocked about it.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying DreamWorks copied my stuff at all; my works are way too unknown for that and i also know that some similar ideas buzzing around
from time to time, but seeing a whole package of "my ideas" coming to live on the big screen and myself has nothing to do with hurts, I have to admit.

You know I carry the idea of Santaman with me for quite some time, but beside some tiny achievements, like the releases of the Santaman Comicbook in 2006 ( just in Germany) and the Animated short in 2009, the franchise never got off the starting blocks.

I guess this big movie means the end of my good old Santaman concept. Now Santaman will look like a cheap copy version of the Rise of the Guardian. What a pity (sniff)

It felt like a big missed opportunity. And YES I am envious !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



Anyway I am looking forward for this movie, because I am curious what they made out of the concept and I admire their works.

Now, after I wrote this from my chest, I already feel better.

long time no see! hope u all out there doing great.
i had some big changes in my live these days. i just have been relocated from frankfurt to shanghai, because of my new job.
before i have worked as a freelancer for more than 4 years. now i have enough of that. the last year has been very though. that is why i have choosed to work in a company. now i am working for electronic arts in shanghai and i am looking forward what the future will bring

it is been a while since my last journal update.
I am working now in shanghai/ china on a animation project for a major german company,
unfortunanly i can't show you the stuff i am working on, because it is top secret!
The Santaman project will go om after i am done with my work here.

It's been a while since i wrote my last Journal.
I couldn't continue my work at my Santaman Project because i have to earn some money.
Unfortunately it is much more easier in germany to earn money with
traditional designjobs than with comics or cartoons.
That is really frustrating sometimes, but i have to care for myself.
And so i have to handle my business.  
Made many Commissions for several companys.


One of the most exciting commisions is the work on the Childrens Book from Wolgang Hohlbein.  [link]

It was quite a honor for my to work with him, especially
on his first children's book project.

Comic-Besprechung - Santaman – Der Patron der Gerechtigkeit
Geschichten:
Autor und Zeichner: Daniel N. Djanie alias Gilmec

Story:
Santaman wird von Bürgermeisterin Gladys Jones zu Hilfe gerufen. Denn in Philantropholis häufen sich eigenartige Unfälle. Da stürzt eine junge Frau rücklings über eine Parkbank, weil diese unter ihrem kleinen Gewicht zusammen bricht und Professor Wilburg Schlegel, ein ausgewiesener Experte in Sachen Zähne wird angegriffen. Doch durch wen? Und vor allem weshalb? Und wer ist überhaupt Santaman?

Meinung:
Es waren einst die europäischen Auswanderer, die den Brauch rund um Sankt-Nikolaus in die USA gebracht haben. Dort wurde er besonders durch ein Gedicht von 1823 verändert, in dem das heutige Bild von Santa Claus geprägt wurde. Nun könnte es ausgerechnet ein Autor aus der "Alten Welt" sein, der wieder einmal eine kleine Revolution losbricht. Daniel N. Djanie alias Gilmec besitzt zweifelsohne die nötige Kreativität dazu den Weihnachtsmann ein gänzlich anderes Antlitz zu spendieren.

Santaman ist zu allererst ein Augenschmauss aus Bildern, die Gott sei Dank nicht so geschniegelt daher kommen, wie das Cover und dadurch umso mehr zu der sehr abgefahrenen Geschichte passen. Trotz Computercolorierung bleibt Platz für einige Striche, die scheinbar noch aus Scribble-Phase stammen. So hat der Comic zwar zum Großteil den Touch eines Funnies, hat aber auch eine wirklich künstlerische Seite.

Von der Story her ist Santaman eine herrliche Parodie auf alles und jedes, was mit dem Santa Claus-Mythos zu tun hat. Santaman hat freilich keine Waffen, aber dafür eine ziemlich fiese Rute, mit der er seine Gegner vertrimmen kann. Und natürlich läßt er seinen Gegnern die Wahl: "Singe ein Lied oder trage ein Gedicht vor. Ansonsten kann Dich nichts mehr retten." So ist Santaman eine mit reichlich schwarzen Humor unterlegte Parodie geworden.

Aber Vorsicht: Nicht bei Kindern liegen lassen. Die könnten sonst vom Glauben abfallen.

Fazit:
Santaman ist eine wundervoll schräge und schwarze Parodie auf alles was mit Santa Claus zu tun hat. Prädikat besonders wertvoll.

I am a Comicbookartist and Designer from Frankfurt/Germany.
My first Comicbook "Santaman- Patron der Gerechtigkeit" is currently released by the major german publishing house EHAPA.
I also started to do 2-D Animations.
